Job Summary and Qualifications

This position is 52 weeks long PGY1 residency program built upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies

  • Read and adhere to the current residency manual entitled “Reston Hospital Center PGY1 Pharmacy Resident Handbook”
  • Complete the required Core and Graduation Residency Requirements in the current residency manual.
  • Maintain documentation and self-evaluation in a timely manner within PharmAcademic or similar system
  • The resident shall perform as a pharmacist including interpreting, compounding and dispensing medications and other pharmaceutical supplies according to physician orders issued in a lawful manner by an authorized prescriber in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Provide requested drug information to healthcare professionals and patients, participate in clinical pharmacy services and provide pharmaceutical care to patients as delineated by the Pharmacy Department.
  • Manage systems for the storage, preparation and dispensing of medicinal agents using appropriate techniques and following the health systems policies; effectively supervising technical personnel who may be involved in these processes.
  • Evaluate medication orders, accurately and safely, compounding medications in an acceptable dosage form, appropriately packaging and dispensing pre-manufactured dosage forms.
  • Maintain knowledge pertaining to facility utilization of automated dispensing processes including the use of automated dispensing units, overwrap packaging, and bar coding within the facility.
  • Provide education on rational medication therapy and medication procedures effectively to healthcare professionals, students, patients and the public.
  • Retrieve, analyze, evaluate and interpret scientific literature in order to provide accurate, concise, applicable, and timely drug information response to healthcare professionals.
  • Design implement, monitor, evaluate and intervene in patient pharmacotherapy to ensure effective, safe and economical patient care.
  • Apply clinical pharmacokinetic date to design effective, safe and economical therapeutic medication regimens, collaborating with all individuals involved in the medication use process, when appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for planning, organizing, networking, completing and improving work activities through effective management of time, tasks and available personnel.
  • Participate in implementing goals, objectives, and policy and procedures of the Pharmacy Department and the facility.
  • Effectively manage own professional practice including time and space, professional ethics, continued education, attendance punctuality, and customer focus.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including fulfilling additional pharmacy staffing hours when necessary to display competency

What qualifications you will need:

  • Licensure: Licensed Pharmacist or be eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia upon hire. Must be a licensed Pharmacist within 90 days of the beginning of the residency program.
  • Effective communication, written and verbal skills are required. 
  • Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet software and pharmacy information systems. 
  • Organizational skills to handle multiple activities; self-initiative, independent.
