Accounting Manager Requirements & Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership role
  • Experience in a high-volume, multi-entity environment (legal industry strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of contingency fee structures and trust accounting (IOLTA experience a plus)
  • Advanced proficiency in accounting systems such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, and Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills


Accounting Manager Preferred Background & Skills


  • Experience operating in the legal or professional services sector, especially with contingency-based models
  • Proven record of driving process improvements and adding structure in growing organizations


Accounting Manager Day-to-Day Responsibilities


  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and cash management
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
  • Maintain and reconcile trust accounts (IOLTA) with strict compliance to legal and ethical standards
  • Track and account for case costs, settlements, and contingency fee revenue recognition
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering accountability and effective delegation
  • Partner with leadership to provide financial insights, reporting, and forecasting
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability
  • Assist with budgeting, cash flow management, and long-term financial planning
