Description
Job Title: Transmission Crane Operator
Department: Transmission
Reports To: Foreman
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Four 10-hour days per week.
Position Purpose:
The Transmission Crane Operator position is your first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of our nation's Power Grid. Crane operators control cranes to move heavy materials and objects in industrial settings, construction sites, and around energized powerlines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use standard operating procedures to operate cranes, lifts and other equipment such as hydraulic cranes, lattice booms and telescope booms.
- Inspect equipment and machinery daily for defects and wear, and perform routine maintenance procedures.
- Following safety protocols, ensuring the safe movement of loads is following guidelines. Monitor crane stability and load weights, inspect clearances and overhead lines, and assess ground conditions.
- Be able to coordinate with ground operators and interpret hand and verbal signals.
- Record keeping of materials moved and report any issue to their supervisor.
- Readily join storm restoration efforts in times of need
- Operate vehicles and equipment
Tasks:
- Work safely while performing new construction or maintenance work of transmission lines
- Operate a mini excavator, skid steers, dozers, front loaders, and line trucks
- Troubleshoot and repair minor equipment issues
- Inspect rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Understand when to wear personal protective equipment
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order
- Perform rigorous physical labor
- Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools
- Understand the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding
- Work at heights or confined spaces
- Understand excavation and shoring requirements
- Receive and follow directions
- Can work outside, frequently in inclement weather
- Does all other related work to complete the job
Physical Aspects:
- While performing the responsibilities of this job, team-members require themselves to talk or listen. The job frequently requires the team-member to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- The team-member frequently performs rigorous physical labor; sit; climb different types of structures (wood, steel); balances; stoop, and kneels . Team-members frequently lift or move up to or in-excess of 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
While performing the responsibilities of this job, team-members may frequently work with fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. Team-members are occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Employees perform powerline construction work outside and subject it to diverse weather conditions.

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 years' experience operating a crane in the transmission powerline industry or closely related field
- Must have a current NCCCO or NCCER crane certification
- Must have Rigging Certification
- Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License with no restrictions and acceptable driving record
- Crane mechanical and inspection knowledge a plus
- Able to travel long distances at short notice,
- Work for extended periods in multiple locations,
- Lift an excess 50 lbs.
- Willing to work overtime when requested
